Spotlight on Nature-based Enterprises: VerdeRosa Farm
Published on November 24, 2025
Verderosa Farm in Italy is reimagining what farming can look like when nature, community, and innovation come together. As highlighted in the case study, the farm was founded to counter the biodiversity loss and soil degradation caused by intensive, grain-fed dairy and beef systems, showing instead how grass-fed, regenerative practices can restore ecosystems while remaining productive.
What makes Verderosa stand out is its model as a demonstration farm. Established with support from Etifor, this initiative demonstrates how grass-fed systems can regenerate soils, restore habitats, and revive traditional pastoral landscapes while remaining productive and economically viable. According to the case study, these systems improve soil organic matter, support bird and butterfly populations, and reduce reliance on energy-intensive grains and fertilisers.

Beyond food production, Verderosa Farm’s innovative business model includes a forest kindergarten, ecosystem restoration services, and collaborations with universities, local farmers, and Slow Food. It exemplifies how diversified nature-based enterprises can create multiple revenue streams while delivering measurable environmental and social outcomes - from animal welfare improvements to carbon sequestration and forest restoration.
Like many emerging nature-based enterprises, Verderosa has also faced challenges, particularly recruiting workers with regenerative farming skills and navigating agricultural policies that favour conventional, production-oriented models. Yet these hurdles have strengthened the farm’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and building a future where farmers are valued as stewards of nature.
As the case study shows, Verderosa Farm is more than a farm. It is a living example of what the future of agriculture can look like when ecological restoration and rural livelihoods are placed at the centre. It offers a powerful model for policymakers, investors, and practitioners looking to support the transition toward a nature-positive economy.
