Spotlight on Nature-based Enterprise: ReefCircular
Coastal marine habitats are in crisis. An estimated 30-50% are severely degraded or already lost, with oyster reefs alone having declined by approximately 85% worldwide. Yet much of the global ocean economy, worth over €2.1 trillion annually, depends on these very ecosystems remaining healthy. ReefCircular, a Denmark-based regenerative aquaculture enterprise, is rethinking how marine restoration is done.
Where conventional marine restoration relies on concrete engineering approaches that prioritise structural function over ecological performance, carrying a significant carbon footprint, ReefCircular is taking a biodiversity-first approach. Their artificial reefs are produced using lower-CO₂ materials, including clay and a biodegradable shell-based composite, with surface conditions specifically engineered to encourage rapid marine colonisation. Each reef is tailored to the specific ecosystem and target species at the deployment site, maximising ecological impact while supporting restoration at scale.
The model is built for flexibility. ReefCircular offers full-service ecosystem restoration - covering site assessment, reef design and production, installation, and long-term environmental monitoring - alongside a direct supply model where partners and contractors handle deployment. The subscription-based monitoring service provides clients with measurable biodiversity data that supports ESG reporting, regulatory compliance, and sustainability targets.
The early results speak for themselves. A pilot project in Denmark delivered a 200% increase in species diversity and a 400% increase in fish abundance within just four months. To date, ReefCircular has secured more than €400,000 in non-dilutive funding, built a project pipeline valued at over €1 million, and is preparing to deploy its first large-scale demonstration project in June 2026 — all within a rapidly growing €5.5 billion market. The company is currently raising €300,000 in pre-seed funding to expand production capacity and accelerate deployment.
