Beach Cleanup and Yoga Class in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands
As a selected champion of the UNLEASH Race for Oceans challenge, our community ambassador Sea Going Green will be hosting a hybrid cleanup, yoga class, and expert talk on Saturday, November 27th, starting from 10 am until 2 pm on the beach of Wijk aan Zee at the edge of the Dutch North Sea! Our goal is to raise awareness of plastic pollution in our environment and support SDG 14: Life Below Water! With this cleanup, Sea Going Green aims to promote the health and wellbeing of both people and the planet, which is why this cleanup brings together both elements.
We all know how hectic our daily lives can be and how important it is to slow down. This is why we will start the off day with a yoga session in the beach pavilion, Timboektoe, to get our energy flowing. What could be better than starting your day off with an ocean-front yoga class?
The second part of the cleanup will be a walk on the beach of Wijk aan Zee to take in the sea air and meditate on the health of our planet while picking up litter that we find along our route. After cleaning up the beach, we will wind down back at the pavilion with some snacks and drinks and hear from Karl Beerenfenger from the Plastic Peuken Collectief and Ally Dragozet, marine biologist and CEO from Sea Going Green. Karl will talk specifically about his own grassroots movement, which has gained traction in The Netherlands to ban cigarette butt filters to alleviate plastic pollution in Dutch beaches and cities. Our experts together will further unpack the how and why marine plastic pollution enters into our oceans and watersheds, the impact of this type of pollution, and what we can do to prevent plastics and waste from causing harm.
