A Step Closer to 30x30: IUCN WCPA's Guide for Effective Earth Conservation
The International Union for Conservation of Nature's World Commission on Protected Areas (IUCN WCPA), along with partners WWF, GEF, and TNC, has introduced a comprehensive freely-available guide aimed at promoting the effective and equitable conservation of at least 30% of the Earth's surface by 2030, known as the "30x30 target" of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Unveiled at the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly in Vancouver, Canada, this guide outlines a clear pathway to achieve the target, emphasising the importance of equitable and rights-based actions. The guide serves as a valuable resource for various stakeholders, including governmental planners, policymakers, technical experts, private and public sector entities, international organisations, NGOs, community groups, and Indigenous peoples. The guide highlights the vital importance of these groups as guardians of their lands.
The publication recognises the urgency of meeting the 30x30 target and highlights its significance in safeguarding biodiversity and societal well-being. IUCN Acting Director General Dr. Grethel Aguilar emphasises the guide's role in supporting lasting positive outcomes while respecting the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities.
